There comes a time in every pregnant lady's life when she realizes her rights. One of these is the right to ice cream, especially homemade ice cream, followed closely by the right to purchase the product that is going to make said treat. At least that's what I told Fred when I brought home yet another gadget to shove into our overpacked kitchen. He said nothing, knowing better than to get between me and my ice cream, pregnant or not. He has this thing about keeping his limbs intact.I can't wait to use it! I'm not sure what I should make for my maiden ice cream voyage. Should I do something simple, like vanilla bean or strawberry, or should I pull out the stops and try David Lebowitz's Salted Butter Caramel concoction? (I tried to buy "The Perfect Scoop" today but couldn't find it at Barnes & Noble. It will be mine!)
Any suggestions? What should I make?

Not that I needed it, but this is proof of how uncrafty/chef-y I am. The last month of my pregnancy I ate coldstone like four times a week. And I wonder how i gained 50 pounds?
i'm enjoying reading all your adventures. and your taste in music makes me laugh; well, not your taste but the way you represent it. i listen to equally bad music. and am damn proud of it!
promise you'll write about all the ice cream you make.

I had the perfect ice cream made in that same model of ice cream maker a few weeks ago at a dinner party. I begged the hostess for the recipe and she sent me here:

It's buttermilk ice cream, but it's DIVINE. I kept burbling into my spoon "I didn't know ice cream could be so amazing."
Do it. You won't regret it.
Kathryn
Natasha-I just discovered a Cold Stone right near our apartment. Guess I'll have to do side-by-side comparisons with my ice cream and there. 50 pounds, here I come!
Thanks for reading, Anne. I'm glad I'm not alone in my musical tastes.
Wow Kathryn. This ice cream sounds fantastic. I'm a big buttermilk fan too. Can't wait to try it.
Oh! This ice cream machine obsession is going to be the death of me and my good intentions. Yes, please promise to blog about all the ice cream you make? For those of us (read: moi) too stubborn to buy their own machine (yet).
I'm a sucker for peach ice cream (with a little cracked black pepper on it) -- alton brown has a great sounding peach ice cream recipe

I'm off ice cream for a while, but I may have to try that recipe..it sounds great..I need to get myself an ice cream maker...although my stand mixer supposedly has an ice cream attachment.
I believ pregnancy also entitles you to large warm fresh chocolate chip cookies and nightly foot rubs..
Oh yeah.... you so deserve this! My life would have been so much better with an ice cream maker when I was pregnant.
I bought one a couple of months ago and my first batch was of strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Delicious!!!!
I can't recommend enough the Roasted Banana ice cream. I haven't had a chance to buy the book, but the recipe was posted on Traveler's Lunchbox. It was the first ice cream I made in my first ever ice cream machine. Delicious! So much so that my boyfriend proposed marriage the very next day! There wasn't a reference to the roasted banana ice cream in the proposal, but we made sure to pause long enough to eat the leftovers before calling family with the news. Congrats - on your pregnancy and your ice cream maker!
Luisa-Careful. If you read too much about homemade ice cream your stubborness will quickly erode. I know!
Saul-Thanks for the recipe...and for letting me know about the foot rubs. I'm gonna have to talk to Fred about that.
Kristin-Mmmm, strawberry cheesecake. I'll put it on my list.
Aileen-ROASTED bananas? Sounds divine. Especially if it merited a proposal!
Oh, and congrats on your engagement, Aileen!
Man, I'm jealous...I'd get destroyed if I brought home more kitchen tools!
I bought that exact ice cream maker last year for myself, an I love it! My favorite flavor so far has been this recipe for blackberry.
You need your calcium! And breastfeeding will take all the weight off; I swear I ate a quart of ice cream nightly when I was nursing and I was skinnier than I've ever been in my life, so enjoy. We will take our pleasure vicariously, but your descriptions will have to be extremely thorough!
Oooooh! Ice cream! I recently checked out "perfect scoop" from the library and not only did it inspire me to get my own ice cream maker (I managed to find one at a yard sale for $5) but, after realizing that no matter how hard I tried, there's no way I would get through every. single. recipe before the book was due, I ordered my own copy. (Tip: check out booksprice.com to get it, with shipping, even cheaper than B&N with coupon.)
Anyway, I suggest his chocolate recipe, if you can get your hands on it. SERIOUS yumminess.
The only thing stopping me from buying an ice cream machine is the notion of how much I'd eat once I got it. :)
I so second peach ice cream! God that's good stuff. And if you want to eat it Pennsylvania Dutch Style ('cause who doesn't want to do all things like the Amish) eat the ice cream with a hard, Amish pretzel in place of a spoon.
Good stuff man, good stuff!
Jeff-I'm jealous of your pasta attachment, so we're even.
Teresa-Mmmm...fruity berry ice cream. I'll add it to my list.
Rebecca-This is officially the best comment ever since I've been pregnant. Thanks!
VDOprincess-My husband just bought the book for me. It's so incredible! Can't wait to try all the recipes.
Andrea-I'll help you eat it if you'd like!
Ann-Oh my goodness...a salty/sweet combo, dutch style. Sounds like a scoop of heaven.
